Meeting civil aviation requirements
Richmond military airbase underwent a runway lighting upgrade to meet new military standards. The project involves implementing changes to the airfield ground lighting system.
Key considerations
- Work carried out at live airbase. Constant air traffic from military aircraft.
- Multiple taxiways intersected the runway, necessitating coordination with the air traffic tower and ground staff to ensure continued operation of the runway.
- A new pit and duct system was installed, and cabling and isolating transformers were placed between light positions.
- Infrastructure readiness was ensured to accommodate equipment, primary cables, and secondary cables.
- The works included civil works for foundations, construction of concrete bases, and extending the pit and duct system for future expansion. This included a completely new installation of the approach and threshold lighting systems
- Cables were installed to, and switchover sequenced to minimise any disruption to military operations.
Safety & Efficiency
Overall, the project enhanced the safety and efficiency of the airbase by upgrading lighting systems and communication infrastructure.
