Bushfire Recovery Project

Following the 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, Brefni mobilised 15 licensed demolition and asbestos removal crews across regional NSW to support the NSW Government’s bushfire clean-up program.

Client: Laing O’Rourke

Duration: 6 months

Location: Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven and Far South Coast

As New South Wales surveyed the bushfire devastation of the 2019-2020 Black Summer, the team at Brefni got an unexpected call. Could they mobilise teams in the Southern Highlands and South Coast of NSW to assist in the delivery of the NSW Governments’ Bushfire clean-up program. The task was to mobilise fifteen crews of people and plant, from Campbelltown to Eden, all licenced in demolition and asbestos removal.

The project faced many challenges which included;

  • Managing the publics’ expectations
  • Accessing 250 hazardous sites in both built up and remote locations
  • Legal disposal of highly contaminated materials
  • Undertake removal of friable and non-friable asbestos materials
  • Recycle concrete, brick and steel to reduce landfill
  • Handover a clean and clear block of land to the client / property owner including an Asbestos Clearance Certificate
  • Added to this was the onset of Covid-19 and its impact on life as we know it.
