St James Station – Construction of 16m Access Shaft

Heritage-sensitive shaft construction in constrained inner-city environment.

Client: Sydney Trains

Location: St James Station, Hyde Park, Sydney NSW

Heritage-sensitive shaft construction in constrained inner-city environment

  • 16m deep shaft excavation with secant piling, steel liner installation and two tunnel connections into a 100-year-old brick chamber —without compromising structural integrity
  • Three-stage contaminated water decontamination system: settling tank, two chemical dosing stages, 24/7 continuous operation pumped 16m underground to stormwater drain
  • Full confined space program: twin-crane system, remote-controlled robotic excavator (Broc), gas sensors, cage access and site-specific training
  • Truck turntable designed and constructed on a 1,150m² constrained inner-city site footprint in Hyde Park —a heritage-listed environment
  • Polyurethane resin grouting of existing chamber brickwork to create a watertight membrane; LiDAR drone survey of all shaft and tunnel surfaces for designer verification
