Major upgrade
The Holsworthy Defence Training Area (HTA), located approximately 25 km southwest of Sydney, is a critical military zone used for live-fire exercises, demolitions, and tactical training. Spanning over 20,000 hectares, it is both a highly secure and environmentally sensitive area, requiring careful planning and execution of any infrastructure works.

Brefni is currently delivering a major upgrade of over 38 unsealed fire access trails, covering approximately 115 km. These trails are essential for emergency response, defence logistics, and environmental management. The scope of works includes grading and reprofiling, full-depth pavement reconstruction, base course overlays, installation of dumped rock, construction of passing bays, and reshaping stormwater drainage systems. Some trails also require protection of threatened plant species and careful treatment of steep or erosion-prone terrain.

Strict security and environmental considerations
Due to the site’s defence classification, strict security protocols are in place. All personnel must undergo site-specific inductions and hold appropriate qualifications. Access is tightly controlled, and unexploded ordnance hazard mapping is used to avoid high-risk areas.

Environmental protection is a core focus. Contaminated spoil must be tested before removal, and bunding is used to prevent runoff. Regular environmental risk reviews, audits, and inspections ensure compliance with Australian Standards and Defence environmental requirements.

Critical infrastructure upgrade
This ongoing project demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence. It ensures that critical infrastructure upgrades are delivered responsibly within one of Australia’s most sensitive and strategically important defence environments.
