Brefni was engaged by Sydney Trains for The Hornsby Track Slab Reconstruction Project. This was a high-profile construction project with political sensitivity as it was an enabling project for TfNSW ‘more trains, more services’ 2018 Timetable. The location of the work was shed 16 of Hornsby Maintenance Centre, which is used for maintaining, cleaning and stabling trains.
The project scope included;
The complete renewal of a 340m x 20m concrete track slab with four roads of embedded rail as well as the trade waste drainage system beneath the track slab required for train cleaning and graffiti removal operations
Removal of 25,000 tonnes of spoil and replacement with engineered backfill
Construct 600m of trade waste drainage
Supply and place 6,000 tonnes of concrete
Challenges included;
The scale of the works
The compressed delivery timeframe
Working from incomplete designs
Severely constrained site access for work trains and construction plant
Resource constraints
The requirement to plan all works around the continuing operations of the maintenance centre.
