Client: Sydney Trains
Duration: 12 months
Location: Lambton Road, Broadmeadow
In 2017, Brefni commenced refurbishment works for Sydney Trains on the Lambton Road Overbridge, located in Broadmeadow, NSW. This line carries some 4.8% of NSW total rail passenger travel. Brefni, in partnership with Sydney Trains and designer SMEC, delivered an innovative engineering solution for the project which saw the works delivered ahead of time.
As per the original scope and programme, the works were scheduled across four possessions. Through the delivery of an innovative and holistic approach Brefni delivered the project in three possessions. Sydney Trains benefited from a reduced downtime of rail operation, in turn delivering less impact to the passenger and freight services. Additionally this allowed Sydney Trains to realise savings associated with providing temporary busses.
Challenges experienced on the project include;
Partial demolition of +100 year old overbridge structure.
Dismantling and reinstatement of existing overhead wiring system.
Removal of steel girders and replacement with precast concrete elements.
Bearing replacement works to other areas critically affected by corrosion.
Milling, resurfacing and waterproofing of existing asphalt bridge deck.
